Ten years ago, God put it on my heart to help the many children living in poverty. Of course I could not help them all. But, I could help one. For some reason, I don’t really know why, I had an interest in the Philippines. So, I went to the Compassion International website, and looked for a young boy in their system living in the Philippines. I selected Jomel. He was five years old at the time (I was 55), and we shared the same birthday, September 7th.
We have been sharing letters, cards, pictures, and gifts, for the last 10 years. My gifts have been money for shoes, clothes, and other personal care items for Jomel; and food and other items for the family. My donations have even help the family to replace some of the patched wood walls of their home with blocks. Jomel’s gifts to me have been the letters he eventually learned to write himself, in English, photos of him, his parents, their home, and pictures he drew himself.
After all this time, the circumstances have presented themselves such that I am now able to make the 7,442 mile journey to meet the boy who calls me “Daddy Ed Pierce”, and experience first hand, if for only a few hours, what it is like for people living with very little.
I’m not sure what to expect. Buy I’m guessing it will have an affect me in some way.
